Big Smith’s Mark Bilyeu, drawing on his years as a musicologist and

entertainer,  explores the life, words, and music of Woody Guthrie to
deliver an entertaining afternoon of music and spoken word, bringing the
wandering hobo, New Deal  employee, and people’s music legend Woody Guthrie
to life. Woody’s efforts to make Americans aware of their heritage and
possibilities through songs like “This Land Is Your Land” live on in our
collective consciousness.

Mark’s first musical training came at the hands of his guitar-playing uncles
and aunts at family gatherings in the Ozarks. His weekly gig as a solo
performer in downtown Springfield evolved in 1996 into the cousin-heavy band
Big Smith, known for their original songs inspired by indigenous musical
traditions.

Prior to his love affair with his 1946 Martin D-18 guitar, Mark got a degree
in music education from Missouri State University, and completed his
Master’s degree in music theory  with a thesis on the traditional fiddle
tune “Durang’s Hornpipe.” In 2005 Mark released a solo CD, “First One Free,”
which found him exploring electric guitar music with an ensemble of
roots-based Mississippi musicians. Mark currently teaches Ozarks Culture and
Folklore at Drury University and continues to perform and record with Big
Smith.
